What is Motion Scene Scanner?
Long recordings are mostly nothing: an empty corridor, a parked car, a static screen. The Motion Scene Scanner exploits that. It samples the video at fixed one-second steps, computes how much each frame differs from the previous one at reduced resolution, and flags the windows where the difference stays above a threshold — movement, a person entering frame, a scene cut, a light changing. What you get is a short list of activity windows with a peak-frame thumbnail for each and a jump button that seeks the preview straight to the moment. It is the same trick professional CCTV review uses: filter the static, watch only the segments where something happened. On a recording where 95% of the time nothing moves, this collapses hours of scrubbing into a couple of minutes of targeted viewing.

Why static-frame filtering works
Compression noise aside, a camera pointed at a still scene produces nearly identical frames second after second, so the difference score hugs zero. Any real event — a person, a vehicle, a door moving — produces a sustained spike. The scanner's threshold separates those two regimes. Rain, snow, camera shake and aggressive compression all blur the line, which is what the sensitivity control is for: noisier scenes want a stricter threshold.
The CCTV review workflow
1) Load the recording. 2) Scan at Medium sensitivity. 3) Work the list top to bottom, jumping to each window. 4) For anything suspicious, note its timestamp in the original file. 5) Re-scan at High sensitivity only on the stretches that matter. This is the review pattern that turns a 20-hour export into a 30-minute task — the tool watches the boring parts so you never have to.
Limits to know about
The scanner sees change, not meaning: it cannot tell a person from a shadow or a cat from an intruder, and gradual changes (a slow zoom, dawn breaking) may never cross the per-second threshold. Treat it as a fast index of where the picture moves — the final reading is always yours.
